Separate New Roof Covering From Structural Work

Shawnee’s September 2026 Remodel Permit Process lists re-shingling under No Permit Required and new framing under Permit Required. That is the useful starting distinction for a roof-covering project inside the city.

Shawnee Permitted Remodel Process

  1. Application and review

For work requiring a permit, the owner or contractor submits the application and required documents. Review comments can require a corrected resubmittal.

  2. Construction and inspection

The City flowchart shows construction after passing review, followed by inspection. An application by itself is not the completed approval process.

  3. Corrections and closeout

A failed inspection leads to identified corrections and applicant-requested reinspection before closeout. The chart does not promise a particular review duration.

When a Roofing Project Changes Scope

Tear-off can expose damaged wood or structural conditions hidden beneath the covering. Replacing shingles and adding new framing are different tasks. When the planned work changes, the roofing and permit scope needs to change with it.

The property location matters too. A Shawnee mailing address does not establish that every parcel is inside municipal limits, and Twin Lakes properties can involve land or lease authority. The roofer coordinates the actual proposed work with the appropriate jurisdiction before structural or other approval-dependent work begins.

Shawnee Roofing Permit FAQs

Does the City say re-shingling requires a permit?

No. The City’s September 2026 remodel chart places re-shingling in the No Permit Required column. New framing appears in the Permit Required column. Other roofing scopes need their own determination.

Does no permit mean installation rules do not apply?

No. A permit exception does not waive the applicable technical installation and code requirements for the roofing work.

Where are the City’s application and inspection resources?

The Shawnee applications, permits and inspections page links the City’s current entry points. The actual property and work scope determine which process applies.
